The health benefits of walking are well documented. Regular walking can help you lose weight and can reduce the risk of developing heart problems, type 2 diabetes and osteoporosis.
Walk and talk coaching enables you to combine the benefits of gentle exercise whilst you talk about your plans, your work issues and concerns. There is something about walking alongside someone that enables you to talk deeply and personally, which might otherwise feel uncomfortable in a more formal setting.
With that in mind I offer Coaching Retreats at The Old Bakery, the B&B which my husband Mike and I set up in 2011. We are delighted to be winners of the AA's Friendliest B&B of the Year 2016/17 and we also currently hold the AA's 4 Star Gold Award, Breakfast and Evening Meal Awards and a Trip Advisor Certificate of Excellence.
Having established the B&B as a place with an excellent reputation for great food, super-comfortable beds, warm hospitality and a peaceful, calm setting, it is the perfect place for people to stay and relax.
But rather than it just be a short break before guests leave to return to all the same issues, I offer clients the opportunity to think about these issues and to come up with a plan to address them. Guests typically will arrive on a Friday afternoon and after being welcomed with tea or coffee and some of Mike’s home-made cake, Alison starts the first coaching session to understand what the issues are, go through the results of questionnaires that have been completed prior to arrival and establish what goals the person being coached wants to achieve.
I coach people individually but I will also coach couples with the same goals e.g. setting up a joint business or wanting a complete change of life-style. Guests can stay on their own, with a non-participating partner or with both partners taking part. After the first coaching session, guests are free to eat out at one of the many top quality pubs and restaurants locally or to enjoy more of the local food with an evening meal prepared by Mike.
After a breakfast that previous guests have described as 'legendary' and ‘lasting until supper’ – a choice of fresh fruit starters, fruit juices, cereals, porridge, local yogurts, a choice of six main courses, home-baked croissants, toast and home-made jams and marmalade;, guests have a choice of being coached at The Old Bakery or in a walk and talk session on one of North Norfolk’s beautiful beaches (Wells-next-the Sea, Holkham or Cley depending on the season) or in local woods such as Pretty Corner near Sheringham.
Being out in the open air is energising and the act of walking and talking gives both coachee and coach the time to think and reflect on what is being discussed. I'm guided by the person I'm coaching on how far and for how long they want to walk and will finish the session at a local café to summarise what has been discussed and write down the action points that have been identified during the walk.
The rest of the day is free for the coachee (and partner) to explore North Norfolk on their own. There are numerous places to visit that appeal to all tastes within a short distance of The Old Bakery.
After breakfast on Sunday morning I offer further coaching to build upon anything the coachee has thought of since the previous day. I offer a telephone coaching session to follow up on the agreed actions and further coaching can be arranged if required.
I'm aware that coaching is often thought of as something that only senior executives use and partly that is due to the actual or perceived cost of executive coaching. From my experience I'm aware of the real need that people have for support, whether that is for their career progression or for handling their career crises.
For that reason, I have deliberately priced the Coaching Retreats to make them affordable for a much wider range of people than may have previously considered coaching. I'm also keen to spend time coaching people individually or as a couple with the same goals, rather than offer group coaching with minimal one to one coaching as I believe this is more effective for the person being coached. My aim is that people will consider the weekend a worth-while investment in their future.
I can’t guarantee that you will find the new job or the new life you are searching for but I do know that identifying what steps you need to take, creating an action plan and having follow-up coaching sessions means it is much more likely to happen.
I also understand that a successful coaching relationship is built upon the trust and rapport between the coach and coachee. I have a free initial discussion on the phone lasting around 30 minutes to ensure that both of us feel that we would like to work together.
Coaching Retreat Weekend: includes 2 nights bed and breakfast, one evening meal (Friday), six hours coaching over the weekend and an hour telephone follow-up coaching and all materials.

Coaching Retreat Weekend runs from late afternoon arrival on a Friday to departure by mid-day on a Sunday.
